Born March 12, 1941 in Moscow.
Son of Sergei Smirnov, author of books about the defenders of the Brest Fortress and host of the popular Soviet television program "Podvig" .
In 1962 he graduated from VGIK (directing department, workshop of M. Romm). He made his debut in the war film "A Span of the Earth" (1964, together with B. Yashin) based on the story of the same name by G.Ya. Baklanov. A real event in Soviet cinema was his film "Belorussky Station" (1971) .
After his third film "Faithfully and Truthfully" (1980) Smirnov retired from directing and worked mainly as a screenwriter and playwright. His play "My Dear Ones" in 1985 was staged by the Moscow Satire Theater. He also acted as the author of a number of stories in the newsreels "Fitil" .
During the years of perestroika, he was actively involved in social activities. Together with Elem Klimov, from 1986 to 1989, he headed the Union of Cinematographers.
In the 1990s, he staged television plays, television concerts, theatrical performances, as an actor starred in a number of notable roles. People's Artist of the Russian Federation (2003).
