Born March 25, 1967 in San Francisco, California - American artist working in the genre of performance, sculpture, drawing, video, etc., a prominent representative of contemporary art in the United States.
Barney is best known for his series of experimental videos "Cremaster" (five films in total, 1995-2002), in which he acted as a screenwriter, director, producer, and starring actor. The semantic structure of Barney's video works is complex and multifaceted: fantastic images are woven into a multi-tiered system of allegories and metaphors. In fact, Matthew Barney's films are large-scale artistic actions transferred to videotape, while paintings and "sculptures" from a Vaseline-like mass belonging to Barney's own hands are fancifully interwoven into the imagery of the film. Matthew himself considers himself primarily a sculptor.
The Guardian called the Cremaster series “the first truly outstanding film creation in the context of the visual arts, after Bunuel and Dali's Andalusian Dog”.
One of the artist's recent works is the video Drawing Restraint 9, starring his wife, the Icelandic singer Bjork.
Many critics call Matthew Barney one of the most scandalous and interesting artists of our time.
