Fernando Arrabal is a Spanish actor and director, playwright, screenwriter, poet and novelist.
The son of Carmen Gonzalez and artist Fernando Arrabal Sr. was born on August 11, 1932 in Melilla, Spain. In 1936, there was a coup that led to a civil war in the country. Fernando Arabal's father, for his disagreement with the new government and rebel activities, was sentenced to death, which was later commuted to thirty years in prison.
In prison, Fernando Arrabal Sr. tried to commit suicide. Doctors declared him insane and placed him in a mental hospital. However, as it turned out later, all this was just a game, and, taking advantage of the weak security system, the actor's father fled from the hospital. Meanwhile, Fernando's mother, fearing for the life and future of her son, even at the beginning of hostilities took him to Ciudad Rodrigo. Here the actor was admitted to a Catholic school, where he studied for four years. In 1940, mother and son moved to Madrid. Arrabal continued his studies at the local church school, after which he entered the Madrid college.
In 1941, the actor received the title of "Gifted Child". Fernando's mother insisted that her son enter the military academy, and even enrolled him in preparatory courses, but the ambitious young man refused to attend them. For such disobedience to the parental word, Carmen sent her son to Tolosa to study at the school of theoretical and practical industry. While here, Fernando wrote a number of poems and plays. In 1954, Arrabal went to Paris in order to get better acquainted with the theatrical culture of France. Here he met a girl translator, who later became his wife. In 1955 they will receive a grant to study at the University of Paris.
The first films with Fernando Arrabal as an actor began to appear in 1966 - Who are you Polly Magu? and Le lapin de Noel. In 1968, Fernando made his debut as a screenwriter, presenting the film Fando and the Fox to the viewer, and already in 1971, having released the film Long Live Death, he also established himself as an equally talented director. In total, throughout his career, Arrabal played more than twenty roles in films, made seven feature films, wrote 100 plays, 800 poems, and published 14 novels.
