American director, screenwriter and actor, master of the comedy genre and creator of the View Askew universe was born in the summer of 1970 in the small town of Red Bank, New Jersey. Kevin Patrick Smith grew up in an ordinary family of a postman and a housewife and was the youngest of three children. The craving for cinema woke up in the young man back in his school years, when he was a cameraman for a basketball team, and watching the movie Freeloader by Richard Linklater impressed Kevin so much that he finally decided to link his life with cinema. After graduating from school, Kevin Smith went to Canada and entered the Vancouver Film School, from where he was, unfortunately, expelled after only four months. It was there that he met film producer Scott Monsieur, who became not only a friend of Kevin, but also an almost permanent producer of his films.
Disappointed in college, the future director returns to his native New Jersey, where he gets a job in a supermarket. However, routine and not the most joyful work did not kill Kevin's talent, but, on the contrary, inspired him to shoot the debut picture of The Clerk, which he filmed with his own money and practically with the help of improvised means and friends. Black and white, but very funny and charming comedy was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival, where the film attracted the attention of several film companies. In 1995, the second film with Kevin Smith as a director and screenwriter was released - the Lobotryasy film, however, despite a larger budget and support from producers, the film could not repeat the success of the Clerks at the box office. After that, the films Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jersey Girl and others came out. Smith is one of those directors who also act as actors in their films, the roles of Kevin Smith can be seen in almost every of his projects, since he is one of the participants in the legendary tandem - Jay and the silent Joe, who unite all the director's films with an invisible thread.
The director is married to actress Jennifer Smith, with whom they raise their daughter Harley Quinn, named after the heroine from the Batman comics.
