Born on May 5, 1928 in the village of Shemonikha, East Kazakhstan region. In 1946-1950 he studied at the Faculty of Journalism of the Kazakh State University named after S.M. Kirov. As a journalist he was published since 1948, worked in the newspaper Priirtyshskaya Pravda (Semipalatinsk), served in the army, then was the editor of the district newspaper Leninskoe Znamya (Novosibirsk region). Ivanov's first published works of fiction were the short stories "Rain" (1954) and "Alkina's Songs" (1956; a book of the same name and simultaneous book of stories; play, 1964; opera libretto, 1967; television movie, 1973). The almost detective acuteness of collisions, the brightness of everyday and psychological sketches, the ethnographic richness of the "Siberian" material, simple, uncomplicated language and compositional clarity made Ivanov's works not only an exciting reading for the widest layers of readers, but also a good basis for dramatization and film adaptations. This was most vividly discovered by Ivanov's best works - the novels "The Povitel" (1958), "Shadows disappear at noon" (1963; popular television film of the same name, 1972) and "Eternal Call" (book 1, 1970, Gorky State Prize of the RSFSR, 1971; book 2, 1976; TV movie of the same name based on Ivanov's script, USSR State Prize, 1979), which have earned high recognition from official Soviet critics.
Gravitation towards a large-scale multi-figured narration with many peripheral characters and plot branches, the desire, in the traditions of the Russian epic novel of the "Tolstoyan" model, through the history of several generations of one family to show the history of the people at the turning stages of its social life, "black and white" contrast in the image heroes, open party engagement are distinguished by Ivanov's novels, events in which invariably concentrate around the problem of revolutionary shifts and socialist construction in Russian Siberia (the time range is from the beginning of the century to the period of the Great Patriotic War and the post-war decades). Since the late 1960s, Ivanov has lived in Moscow, held major posts in the leadership of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Hero of Socialist Labor (1984). Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1985). Since 1972 - editor-in-chief of the "Young Guard" magazine.
Adherence to the ideals of communism, a resolute rejection of possessiveness (hence the hatred of the kulaks and the corresponding interpretation of the processes of collectivization in the Siberian countryside), irreconcilability towards the enemies of Soviet power, whose intrigues, according to the author, do not weaken over the years, are the main postulates of Ivanov's work, embodied by him as well in numerous stories (Sat. Random encounters, 1966), stories Life on a sinful earth (1970), Feud (1979), Sadness of the fields (1983), the book of journalism Living beauty of creativity (1985). The lyrical tonality is typical for the writer, The Tale of Lost Love (1984), which stands somewhat apart in the fictional repertoire.
Anatoly Ivanov died in Moscow on May 31, 1999.
