The actor was born on February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio. He was the only child of William Henry Gable, an oil driller, and his wife Adeline (nee Herschelman). The ancestors of his parents were from Germany. Clark's mother suffered from epilepsy and passed away seven months after his birth, so the boy was raised by his father and stepmother, Jenny Dunlap.
The actor has been married five times.
He died on set from a heart attack on November 16, 1960.
