David was born in Queens, (New York, USA) into a Jewish family of lawyers Arthur Schwimmer and Arlene Coleman. He lived in Valley Stream, Long Island, until he was two years old. Subsequently, he and his family moved to Los Angeles, California. At the age of ten, he takes on the role of a fairy in the Jewish version of Cinderella. In 1979, David attends the Shakespeare workshop taught by Ian McKellen. For three years in a row, young Schwimmer participates in the Shakespeare Festival (annually held on the shores of Lake Tahoe), twice he takes first places.
He attended Beverly Hills High School, where he appeared in many performances, including Anne Frank's Diary. After graduating from the theater department at Northwestern University, he, along with fellow students, created the Lookingglass Theater, as well as an association of actors, screenwriters and directors. Schwimmer has directed several performances and starred on television.
