December 5, 1890, Vienna, Austria-Hungary - August 2, 1976, Beverly Hills, California, USA - German film director, after 1933, lived and worked in the United States. One of the greatest exponents of German Expressionism, Lang directed the biggest budget film in silent film history (Metropolis, 1927) and anticipated the aesthetic of American noir (The City Seeks a Killer, 1931). Fritz Lang is also known for the stories of the criminal psychiatrists-hypnotists Caligari (working on the script) and Mabuse (directing the entire trilogy).
