August 14, 1914 - May 21, 1984 - American actress, Academy Award nominee in 1937.
Born in Butte, Montana. She began her career as an actress in 1933 with episodic film roles, while still using her real name. As Andrea Leeds, she first appeared in Come and Own in 1936 and achieved her first success a year later in It Could Happen to You .
That same year, Andrea Leeds was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Kay Hamilton in The Door to the Stage. Following the success of this film, Leeds was predicted to play Melanie in Gone With the Wind, but Olivia de Havilland ultimately won the role. In 1938, the actress played Hazel Daws in Goldwyn's Folly, but the film was not very successful and her role went unnoticed. Leeds had her first major role in They Need Music (1939), but after that she only appeared in three films before leaving filming in 1940, being quite a popular actress. She decided to go for it after her marriage in 1939 to Robert S. Howard. She devoted herself entirely to family and raising two children. She was engaged in horse breeding with her husband, and after his death in 1962, she started her own business related to jewelry. Andrea Leeds died of cancer on May 21, 1984 in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 69.
