July 29, 1869 - May 19, 1946 - American writer, whose work was highly regarded in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. One of three writers, along with William Faulkner and John Updike, to have received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction more than once. Until 1960, Tarkington's works were filmed 57 times, after that - only once. The Russian reader is known mainly for the trilogy about 12-year-old Penrode Scofield, aimed at readers of about the same age.
