Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania (now an area in northwestern Philadelphia) in 1935 to Edmund Albert and Dorothy Bateman. As a child, he attended St. Joseph Preparatory School, where he was president of the Drama Club. After graduating from the Catholic University of America in Washington, James Bateman served in the United States Air Force as an intelligence officer. After his dismissal, he took up an acting career, performing at first with a number, where he portrayed an American poet with a southern accent. At the same time, he adopted the pseudonym Henry Gibson, which became a paraphrased version of the name of the playwright Henrik Ibsen. From 1957 to 1962, Henry Gibson was a frequent guest on Jack Paar's Tonight Show, where he recited his poetry many times. His film career started in 1963 with a small role in Jerry Lewis's film The Nutty Professor. Gained popularity in the United States, starring in the television comedy show "Hochma Rowan and Martin" (1968-1971). This was followed by a number of roles in the films of Robert Altman, including "Nashville" (1975), where Gibson became the performer of a song written in his own verses, "Long Goodbye" (1973) and "Health" (1980). The role of country singer Haven Hamilton in Nashville earned the actor a Golden Globe nomination and a National Society of Film Critics Award. Henry Gibson became the most famous in wide circles after the role of the leader of the fascists in the comedy film musical by John Landis "The Blues Brothers" (1980). At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, the actor had roles in The Monster in the Closet (1986), Suburb 1989 (1989) and Gremlins 2: A New Batch (1992). He also appeared in a small role as a bar-goer in Paul Thomas Anderson's drama Magnolia (1999) .
In addition to his film roles, Henry Gibson often took part in the scoring of cartoons, including Charlotte's Web (1973), Tom and Jerry's Big Movie (1992) and The Horrible Adventures of Billy and Mandy (2006) .
Gibson's most recent roles were in Crashers (2005) and Big Stan (2008), as well as the television series Boston Lawyers, where he featured prominently as Judge Clark Brown. In 1966, the actor married Lois Joan Geiger, who was five years older than him. The couple had three children who linked their careers with the film industry. Their marriage lasted until Geiger's death in May 2007. Henry Gibson died two years later, on September 14, 2009, from cancer at his home in Malibu, a week before his 74th birthday. The actor was cremated, and his ashes were buried in Los Angeles at Westwood Cemetery.
