August 15, 1879 - June 18, 1959 - American actress, one of the members of the Barrymore family of actors. She is the sister of actors John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, and is also Drew Barrymore's great-aunt. The future actress spent her childhood in Philadelphia, where she attended a Catholic school. Her first appearance on Broadway was in 1895, in a play starring her uncle John Drew Jr. and Maud Adams. She also appeared with him in the play Rosemary in 1896. Among her Broadway roles are also Nora in Dollhouse (1905) and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (1922). In 1926, she achieved great success, playing in W. Somerset Maugham's comedy production "The Constant Wife" .
Ethel Barrymore was a supporter of the Actors' Finance Association and even took an active part in their strike in 1919. The actress was a big fan of baseball and boxing. But her love for boxing was lost after July 4, 1919, she witnessed the brutal fight between William Dempsey and Jess Willard, in which Dempsey broke Jess's jaw and knocked out several of his teeth. Since then, Barrymore has vowed that she will never attend another fight. She first appeared on the big screen in 1914, but began an active film career only in the 1940s, after her move to Hollywood. The only two films in which she starred with her two brothers were "National Parade of the Red Cross" (1917) and "Rasputin and the Empress" (1932) .
In 1945, for her role in the film "Only a Lonely Heart" Ethel Barrymore was awarded the "Oscar" in the nomination "Best Supporting Actress". Other famous films with her participation were Spiral Staircase (1945), The Paradine Affair (1947), Portrait of Jenny (1948) and Midnight Kiss (1948). In the 1950s, the actress also appeared on television several times, performing small roles in a number of television series. In 1900, Winston Churchill offered Ethel Barrymore to become his wife, but she refused. On March 14, 1909, she married Russell Griswold Colt. They had three children: actress and singer Ethel Barrymore Colt (1912-1977), Samuel Colt (1909-1986) and John Drew Colt (1913-1975). The couple broke up in 1923, and being a true Catholic, the actress never married again. Ethel Barrymore died on June 18, 1959 at her home in Hollywood from heart disease, two months before her 80th birthday. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles.
