January 29, 1892 Berlin - November 30, 1947, Los Angeles - German and American film director, actor, screenwriter, producer
Born into a Jewish family of a successful businessman, weaving owner Simon (Simcha) Lyubich (born in Grodno) and his wife Anna Lindenstadt. In 1899-1902 he attended elementary school, then gymnasium. In 1908 he began his studies at a textile shop on Konigstrasse. Then he worked as an accountant in his father's office. He met the actor Victor Arnold and became his student. The first cabaret performances followed. From 1911 to 1913, Lubitsch played at the Reinhardt Theater. In 1913 he made his film debut as an actor, and in 1914 - as a director. In 1918 he began his collaboration with Paula Negri and Emil Jannings. Until 1922, he shot in Germany a number of films that enjoyed great success among the German public: "Madame Dubarry", "Princess of the Oysters", "The Pharaoh's Wife" and "The Flame". In December 1922, together with Paula Negri, he left for Hollywood, where he directed the film Rosita with Mary Pickford. The film did not pay for itself, and Lubitsch was forced to start staging so-called salon comedies, modeled on the films of Cecil de Mille. The first success for Lubich was brought by the film "The Wedding Circle" .
Subsequent films solidified his reputation in Hollywood. Lubitsch's permanent screenwriter was Hans Kraly, who came from Germany. Lubitsch died on November 30, 1947 in Hollywood from a heart attack. In films made during the "Hollywood" period, Lubitsch portrayed life in elegant salons. The interiors were filled with the subdued light of antique crystal chandeliers, the faded tones of heavy silk curtains went well with the graceful ornamentation of French carpets. Lubitsch was one of the founders of the so-called "jazz theme" in cinema (the age of jazz).
