August 6, 1868, Villeneuve-sur-Fer, France - February 23, 1955, Paris, France - French poet, playwright, essayist, the largest religious writer of the 20th century.

Younger brother of the sculptor Camille Claudel, Rodin's model and mistress. In 1886, at Christmas Mass in Notre Dame Cathedral, he experienced a religious conversion, in 1890 he converted to Catholicism. As a diplomat he served in Europe (Czechoslovakia, Germany, Denmark, Belgium), Asia (China, Japan), Latin America (Brazil), USA.

On March 10, 1913, at his insistence, his sister, the sculptor Camille Claudel, was placed in a psychiatric hospital (in the city of Ville-Edward in Neuilly-sur-Marne). This was done against her will and the doctors' conclusion that there was no need to keep her there. Camille Claudel was in clinical conditions until her death.

Claudel was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor. In 1946 he was elected a member of the French Academy.

Claudel's drama Joan of Arc at the stake (1939) became the basis for Arthur Honegger's oratorio, which was filmed in 1954 by Roberto Rossellini.

The prestigious private Lyceum Claudel in Ottawa is named after the poet.
