Demi is known as the author of musical films. His three early films are best known - the full-length debut Lola (1961) with Anouk Aime in the title role, Bay of Angels (1963) with Jeanne Moreau, and Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) with Catherine Deneuve. All three films were musical. Some of the songs written by the composer Michel Legrand have become widely known. The most successful film of the three was Umbrellas Cherbourg. Demi's first color film (before that the director worked with cameraman Raul Coutar, who shot on black and white film) brought him the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and four Oscar nominations.
In 1969, Demi directed his first English-language film, Atelier of Models, in the USA, followed by, again in France, Donkey Skin, based on the tale of Charles Perrault. Later, Demi worked both in France and in the USA, but his later films did not have the same success as the earlier films.
