In 1958, he married a Mormon student, Lola Jean Van Wagenen, from Utah. The wife made efforts to discourage the young husband from alcohol and force him to abandon, from her point of view, an immoral career as a painter. After dropping out of college, the newlyweds moved to New York, but there Redford continued his painting studies, becoming a student at the Pratt Institute (Pratt). Since 1959 he has been engaged in theatrical productions on Broadway and in various entertainment television shows. The first serious film work - the film about the Korean War "Hunt on the Battlefield" (1962), where R. Redford played a recruit soldier who got to the outpost, standing on the 38th parallel. This was followed by the role of seductive heartthrobs, bright journalists, famous bandits. Several times he was nominated for "Oscar" as "Best Drama Actor", but never received the award.

Not limited to the acting path, Robert Redford tried himself as a filmmaker. In 1981, he established the Sundance American Institute of Independent Film, which has been hosting an international film festival of the same name in Park City, Utah since January 1985.

R. Redford received his first Oscar in the category “Best Director” in the same 1981 for the psychological drama “Ordinary People”. In 2002, he was awarded an honorary Oscar in recognition of numerous acting works well remembered by the audience.

However, in 2016, Robert confirmed that he was retiring as an actor and would take up directing.
