In 1935-40, Gordon worked as an actor and director at the progressive New York theater Group Theater, which employed such future-recognized masters as Kazan, actors John Garfield and Lee Jay Cobb, playwright Clifford Odets.

In 1940, Gordon went into the cinema, where he began working as a co-director at the Columbia studio, and then became an editor. He directed his first feature film in 1942.

Gordon's first films were category B minor films, the best of which was the crime drama One Dangerous Night (1943) from the series about the detective nicknamed the Lone Wolf (played by Warren William).

Towards the end of the 1940s, "Gordon moved to Universal Studios, where he rose to Category A films," "having achieved success with a series of dense melodramas and action films." The clever film noir "The Web" (1947) featured a strong storyline and quality acting by Ella Raines, Edmond O'Brien, William Bendix and Vincent Price. In the noir drama The Act of Murder (1948), a respectable judge (Frederic March) is placed in a situation where, to alleviate the suffering of his terminally ill wife, he has only one remedy - to kill her. The drama Beyond the Woods (1948) was a fairly successful prequel to William Wyler's successful film The Foxes (1941). Based on the play by Lillian Hellman, the film tells about the hypocrisy and ruthlessness of the family of wealthy landowners from the southern states, starring Frederick March, Dan Duria, Edmond O'Brien and Ann Blyth. Noir "Lady Gambling" (1949) provided an opportunity for Barbara Stanwick to show her acting skills, demonstrating various facets of the emotional state of the gamer. The film noir film "Woman on the Run" (1950) was a rather successful variation on the theme "woman in danger" starring Ayda Lupino. The production noir I Can Get You At A Wholesale Price (1951) provided an opportunity for Susan Hayward to play the role of a ruthless fashion entrepreneur. Western Convict Lake (1951) starring Glenn Ford and Gene Tierney was Gordon's rare foray into the genre.

“The highest achievement of Gordon at the first stage of his Hollywood career was the production of the film Cyrano de Bergerac (1950)”, based on the comedy of Edmond Rostand, for which the leading role in which the actor Jose Ferrer won an Oscar.

“Gordon's career was cut short by the anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Due to the fact that in his youth, Gordon was associated with several leftist organizations, he was accused of communist leanings. " “For a year after his triumph with Cyrano de Bergerac, Gordon couldn't get a job. Since he refused to give the names of his acquaintances who support communist ideas before the Anti-American Activities Commission, he was blacklisted in Hollywood. " As a result, "for eight years, Gordon directed only one film in Australia, Wherever She Goes," and then returned to the United States, staging over ten performances on Broadway in 1952-56. “Gordon was only able to return to cinema at the end of the decade” when he was “invited back to Hollywood by Universal Producer Ross Hunter, who wanted him to stage a“ lightweight sexual farce ”Intimate Conversation (1959) with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. The film became a hit, and some critics consider it one of his most popular and memorable directorial works, as well as Day's best film.

"After this film, Gordon started getting work again, but this time instead of the dense, hard and harsh dramas that brought him fame, he took a 180-degree turn and began working on glossy, big-budget mainstream comedies," creating tortured and secondary imitations Intimate Conversations such as Boys Go for a Walk (1962) with Kim Novak and James Garner, I'm Back, Darling (1963) with Doris Day and James Garner, and A Very Unusual Service (1965) with Rock Hudson.

In 1960, Gordon directed his last crime thriller, Portrait in Black, with Lana Turner and Anthony Quinn, and in 1966, the comedy western Texas Beyond the River (1966) with Dean Martin and Alain Delon.

After completing his latest film, the religious comedy How Do I Love You? (1970) Gordon joined the Department of Performing Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles.
