She built her own career as a model, Trump Organization executive, businesswoman and author, while remaining closely associated with the Trump family in public life. She died in New York City on July 14, 2022, at age 73. ## Who was Ivana Trump? Ivana Trump, born Ivana Zelníčková, was a Czech-born American businesswoman, author and media figure. She became internationally known during her marriage to real-estate developer Donald Trump, but she also held executive positions in his businesses and later ran commercial ventures under her own name. She was born on February 20, 1949, in Zlín, then part of Czechoslovakia. Before marrying Donald Trump, she worked as a model in Europe and North America. Her highly visible life in New York during the 1980s made her a regular subject of celebrity and tabloid coverage. She was more than a social presence at Trump Organization events. Ivana held senior positions connected to major Trump properties and was publicly presented as an executive involved in their operation and design. After her divorce, she remained in the public eye through books, product licensing, fashion-related businesses and television appearances. For example, references to Ivana Trump as a Trump Organization executive refer to her work at major Trump properties, not simply to her role as Donald Trump’s wife. ## Was Ivana Trump Donald Trump’s first wife? Yes. Ivana Trump was Donald Trump’s first wife. They married in 1977 and divorced in 1992 after a widely covered separation and divorce case. They had three children: - Donald Trump Jr., born in 1977 - Ivanka Trump, born in 1981 - Eric Trump, born in 1984 During their marriage, Ivana and Donald Trump were among New York’s most visible wealthy couples. Their family life, business projects and public appearances drew extensive media attention as Donald Trump expanded his real-estate, hotel and casino interests. Ivana Trump was married four times. Before Donald Trump, she married Austrian ski instructor Alfred Winklmayr in the early 1970s. After her 1992 divorce from Donald Trump, she married Italian businessman Riccardo Mazzucchelli from 1995 to 1997 and Italian actor Rossano Rubicondi in 2008; that marriage ended in divorce in 2009. For example, when a news report refers to Donald Trump’s “first wife” or the mother of his oldest three children, it means Ivana Trump—not her daughter Ivanka or his later wives, Marla Maples and Melania Trump. ![Ivana Trump and Donald Trump appear together at a public event in the 1980s.](https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?q=Ivana%20Trump%20and%20Donald%20Trump%201980s%20event&w=624&h=352&c=7) ## What did Ivana Trump do beyond her marriage? Ivana Trump had a career of her own before, during and after her marriage to Donald Trump. She began as a model and later became involved with prominent Trump Organization properties during the 1980s. She served as president of the Plaza Hotel after Donald Trump acquired the New York property in 1988\. She also held a senior role connected to the Trump Castle casino resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was associated with design and management work on Trump projects. Accounts of her role at the company vary in emphasis, but she was publicly identified as an executive rather than only as Donald Trump’s spouse. After the 1992 divorce, she developed businesses and media projects under the Ivana Trump name. These included fashion and beauty licensing ventures, jewelry and clothing sales, and product lines marketed through television retail channels. She also wrote books, including the 1992 novel *For Love Alone* and the 2017 advice book *Raising Trump*, which discussed raising her three children. Ivana Trump died in New York City on July 14, 2022\. She was 73 years old. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled that her death was an accident. The medical examiner said she died from blunt-impact injuries to her torso resulting from a fall. This is the official medical determination. It does not support speculation about other causes or circumstances beyond what the medical examiner reported. For example, reports describing her death as accidental are referring to the medical examiner’s ruling, not to an unconfirmed account of her health or personal life. ## Ivana Trump and Ivanka Trump are not the same person Ivana Trump and Ivanka Trump were mother and daughter, not two names for the same person. Ivana Trump was Donald Trump’s first wife. Born Ivana Zelníčková in Czechoslovakia in 1949, she became a businesswoman and public figure in the United States. Ivanka Trump is Ivana and Donald Trump’s daughter, born in 1981\. Her full name is Ivanka Marie Trump. She became a businesswoman and later served as a senior adviser in the White House during her father’s presidency. The names are similar because Ivanka is a diminutive form of Ivana in several Slavic languages. That similarity can make older news coverage confusing, since both women were active in business and appeared frequently in public. For example, a reference to the president’s daughter or a White House adviser means Ivanka Trump. A reference to Donald Trump’s first wife, the Plaza Hotel executive or the author of *Raising Trump* means Ivana Trump. ## What was Ivana Trump’s lasting public legacy? Ivana Trump helped shape the Trump family’s public image during the 1980s and early 1990s. She was a visible figure in New York luxury culture, took part in major Trump Organization projects and remained a celebrity in her own right after her divorce. Her legacy also includes her place within the family. Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump became public figures in business, media and politics, and Ivana was often described by her children as a major influence in their upbringing. Her 2017 book *Raising Trump* offered her own account of that role. Her public visibility should not be mistaken for a formal political role. Ivana Trump did not hold a government office or serve in the Trump administration. Her best-known work was in business, media and celebrity culture. For example, accounts of the Trump family’s rise often include Ivana because she was part of the family’s public presentation during Donald Trump’s early national fame. That was different from the political role later held by her daughter Ivanka. ## Quick answers about Ivana Trump ### Where was Ivana Trump born?
