He attended Mill Hill High School and later attended Embassy Acting School. Upon completion, he landed a job at a theater in Long Island. When World War II broke out, Troughton returned to Britain on a Belgian ship. But the ship ran into a mine, and the actor escaped on a boat. In 1940 he joined the British Navy, rose to the rank of captain and commanded a gunboat in the North Sea.
Patrick Troughton has been married three times. He had two daughters, four sons, as well as a stepdaughter and stepson. Two of his sons became actors. His two grandchildren also became actors - Sam Troughton played in the movie "Alien vs. Predator" and in the TV series "Robin Hood", and Harry Melling became famous for the role of Dudley Dursle in the Harry Potter films.
