Born January 19, 1985, Providence, Rhode Island, USA is an American independent screenwriter, director, producer and cameraman.

Chazelle from an early age began to get involved in cinema and music. While at school, he tried himself as a jazz drummer. Chazelle claims he had a demanding teacher, who became the prototype for Terence Fletcher in the movie Obsession. Chazelle realized that he, unlike the main character of the film, did not have the talent to become a great musician, and after high school he returned to the cinema. Chazelle studied cinema at Harvard University, graduating in 2007.

Chazelle debuted as director and screenwriter in Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. Chazelle co-wrote The Last Exorcism: The Second Coming, directed by Ed Gus-Donnelly. He also wrote the screenplay for the thriller "Grand Finale," which follows a stage-frightened pianist who plays under threat of death. In an interview, Chazelle admitted that he no longer wants to be a "screenwriter for hire" and wants to write his own story. The result was the script for the film "Obsession". The script aroused the interest of the producers, but after no one dared to make a film based on it, it was included in the Black List of the Best Scripts. It was eventually taken over by producer Helen Estabrook, who recruited J.K.Simmons to play Terence Fletcher. Short film, featuring an idea for a future film, was shown at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim, winning the Festival Prize for Best Short Film. In January 2015, the feature film Obsession received five Oscar nominations, including an award for Best Adapted Screenplay from Chazelle. Three of them were victorious.

Chazelle co-wrote the script for "Cloverfield 10", which was released in March 2016. He was also offered to become the director of this tape instead of J.J. Abrams, but he refused. In December 2016, the musical "La La Land" was released with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the lead roles. The film received rave reviews from critics and won 6 Academy Awards, including one Chazelle for Best Director.
