Born December 15, 1952, Newton, Massachusetts is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and actress.

Julie developed an interest in theater as a child. At nine years old, she began attending Boston's Children's Theater, became interested in travel in high school, and visited Sri Lanka and India as part of the Experiment in International Life program, which is part of an international exchange program between the United States and other countries.

In 1970, Taymor went to college in Ohio and graduated with honors in 1974.

Recognition as a director came to Julie Taymor after the release in 1997 of the musical The Lion King, an adaptation of the animated film of the same name. The premiere on stage took place on July 31, 1997 in Minneapolis at the Orpheus Theater and was a huge success. For this work, Taymor won two Tony Awards, Directing and Costume Design, making her the first woman to receive a Tony Award for Directing a Musical.

In 1999, Julie directed the film Titus, a film adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy Titus Andronicus, and in 2002, the film Frida (based on the life of the artist Frida Kahlo). Both films received positive reviews, and Frida was nominated in six Oscar nominations, winning two of them (Best Makeup and Best Original Soundtrack).

Julie Taymor's next work is the 1960s musical Across the Universe, told through modern Beatles compositions, starring Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood. The film was released in September 2007 and was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Julie Taymor won an award for her work on this film at the annual Women in Hollywood Awards hosted by Elle magazine.

In 2010, Taymor's fourth feature film "The Tempest" was released based on the play of the same name by Shakespeare, which she had previously staged in the theater.

In 2011, Taymor premiered a musical about Spider-Man, which became her first work on a musical based on a famous idea after The Lion King. The main role in the musical is played by the young actor Reeve Carney, who plays Prince Ferdinand in The Tempest.
