February 22, 1944, Baldwin, Long Island, New York - April 26, 2017, New York is an American film director, producer, screenwriter and actor of Hollywood films.

Graduated from Florida State University. Uncle of director Ted Demme, who passed away in 2002.

Demme got into feature film working with exploitative producer Roger Corman from 1971 to 1976 as co-producer and co-writer. He further directed three films for Corman's New World studio.

His 1980 film Melvin & Howard did not release widely, but received critical acclaim and allowed the director to be signed to star Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in Extra Shift.

After "Additional shift", Demme left the "big" cinema for a while.

In 1992, Demme won an Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs, the third film (after It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) to win all five major categories (Best Film, Best Director, Best script, best actor and best actress). Demme helped Tom Hanks win an Oscar for his next film, Philadelphia.

Since then, Demme has directed two remakes: The Truth About Charlie, a remake of The Charade, starring Mark Wahlberg in the role previously played by Cary Grant, and The Manchurian Candidate, starring Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.

Demme had his own production company, Clinica Estetico, with producers Edward Saxon and Peter Saraf.
