Born June 12, 1968, Princeton Junction, New Jersey, USA is an American screenwriter, producer and film director.

Studied at West Windsor-Plainsboro South High School with director Brian Singer, actor Ethan Hawke and musician James Murphy. Instead of college, he took a job as an assistant teacher at Christ Church Gymnasium in Perth, Australia, then hitchhiked around the western part of the continent. Returning to the United States a year later, he got a job at a detective agency in New Jersey, where he worked for four years. In 1992, he applied to the New York City Police Department for admission to the Police Academy. When he was about to leave for the academy, his former classmate Singer offered him the opportunity to write the script for his first feature film, Public Access, which won the 1993 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize.

Singer and McQuarrie collaborated again in 1995 on Suspicious Persons, for which McQuarrie received an Edgar Allan Poe Award, an Independent Spirit Award, a BAFTA and an Academy Award. The film was later listed by The New York Times as one of the 1000 Greatest Movies of All Time, and Roger "Chatterbox" Kint's character was included in the AFI's 100 Best Heroes and Villains list. In 2006, the US Writers Guild ranked the film 35th on the list of 101 Greatest Screenplays.

McQuarrie participated in the writing of the script for the film "X-Men", but he was not listed in the credits, he was involved in the development of a script about the life of Alexander the Great with Peter Buchman. The film was supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese and starred by Leonardo DiCaprio, but they decided to make the film Aviator, and as a result Oliver Stone directed his version of Alexander.

McQuarrie also wrote and directed The Arms Path starring Benicio Del Toro, Ryan Phillippe and James Caan.

Wrote and produced the film "Operation Valkyrie", which premiered in Russia on January 29, 2009. The story tells of the attempt on the life of Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944. The script was co-written with Nathan Alexander. They had access to the Stauffenberg family as well as books written by the surviving conspirator Fabian von Schlabrendorff. While working on the script, they conducted research and talked to Hitler's bodyguard. The film was directed by Brian Singer, and Klaus Schenck von Stauffenberg was played by Tom Cruise.
