Although Levinson began his career with scripts for television comedies and continues to write, direct and produce comic films, he has become famous for serious, although not devoid of humor, dramatic films. His first full-length directing experience was The Diner (1982), about a bunch of guys growing up in Baltimore in the late fifties. The debut was not a huge success, but Good Morning Vietnam starring Robin Williams as the overly cheerful army radio host and Rain Man, starring Dustin Hoffman as an autist, released in 1987 and 1988, brought Levinson worldwide fame.
Barry Levinson is known as a director who, without distracting the viewer's attention with either violent special effects or claims to original direction, gives the actors the opportunity to fully show their talent. Unlike Levinson's own scripts, the stories he chooses for his serious directorial work tend to be distinguished by non-trivial and truly dramatic collisions. Often the action of his films takes place in the past and to one degree or another is based on real events ("Good Morning Vietnam", "Bugsy", "Sleepers", etc.).
