Born November 6, 1924, Omaha, Nebraska, USA - American actor and producer.

He grew up on a farm in Iowa. Hartley's father died when the boy was only 5 years old, which led to financial difficulties in the family. At the age of fourteen, Ted entered a competition sponsored by Warner Bros., writing a 50-word essay on "Why I Love To Fly" - and winning a prize of piloting lessons.

Hartley entered the Shattuck military school in Minnesota, but at the age of sixteen he got himself a job at the American naval school, after which he entered the service as a fighter pilot, piloting an F-11. For two years, Ted worked for the Pentagon, providing liaison with Congress, and was an adviser to the president in the White House.

In May 1964, a Hartley fighter jet crashed while landing on the deck of the US naval aircraft carrier Hornet somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Hartley ejected during the fall, avoiding the fate of exploding along with the fighter. Escaped Ted still suffered - he broke his back, and therefore an end was put on his military career. After a period of rehabilitation, Hartley went to Pepperdine University, where he rose to an MBA, later pursuing a career in finance. Ted became vice president of the First Western Finance Corporation.

His next career began in Hollywood.

In 1987, he linked his fortune with Pavilion Communications Inc., a buy-up company for small entertainment companies. Through this work, Hartley learned about the American film distribution company 'RKO Pictures'. He and his wife, actress Dina Merrill, bought 51% of the company; the couple merged Pavilion Communications Inc. with RKO Pictures Corporation in 1991, which became RKO Pictures, Inc. Their first major project was the 1998 remake of Mighty Joe Young.

Hartley repeatedly became a participant in various serial films.
