Born December 31, 1953, Boston, Massachusetts is an American actor.
Without finishing high school, he dropped out and went on tour with a rock band, but later returned and received his diploma.
Remar studied acting with Sanford Mainser at the New York's Neighborhood Playhouse.

Since 2006 he has been acting in the TV series Dexter as the protagonist's adoptive father. His character first appears in flashbacks, and then as an imaginary ghost in front of Dexter, giving him advice.
