Born May 23, 1962, Tel Aviv, Israel - Israeli film director and screenwriter.

At the age of 13, he received an 8-mm movie camera and a film for four minutes of playback as a gift for his bar mitzvah, since his parents knew about his passion for cinema. In 1982, during the Lebanese War, as a conscript, he was in the combat zone for 45 days (30 days in his tank in the place of the gunner). On the first day of the war, June 6, at 6.15 am, following an order, he fired a shot at a pickup truck approaching his tank and later called this moment a turning point in his life. In an interview, Maoz talks about the main psychological difference between the 1982 war and previous Israeli wars, in which regular armies in uniform opposed each other - in Lebanon there were about a dozen enemy groups, whose members often wore civilian clothes. In 1988, after graduating from the Beit Zvi theater school, where he studied cinema, tried to write a script about the experience, but abandoned it, unable to cope with emotions. In 2006, the Second Lebanese War broke out, which forced Maoz to break the silence - his low-budget film Lebanon, in which he acted as a screenwriter and director, caused a sensation and was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, as well as four Israeli the Ophir Prize and the 14th Raya Satyajit Prize.

In 2017, the director's new film, Foxtrot, received the Silver Lion Grand Prix at the 74th Venice Film Festival. The picture is a family tragedy, the plot is divided into three acts. In the first, the parents of conscript Jonathan Feldman receive news of his death, which supposedly turns out to be false due to confusion - perhaps the namesake and namesake actually died. In the second act, the viewer sees a patrol of four Israeli soldiers, one of whom is Jonathan Feldman, but remains in the dark whether this is the soldier whose parents were told about in the first novel, or another. In the third part, the author summarizes his view of the evolution of pain and hatred in the Israeli collective consciousness, leading to spiritual fatigue. In Israel, the tape caused mixed responses, because the army is one of the most respected institutions in this country. Maoz replies that there cannot be a prosperous country where critics are declared traitors, and that he personally takes the position that he takes because he feels pain for his homeland and acts for the love of her.
