Born October 3, 1967, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada is a French-Canadian film director and screenwriter.
He received his primary education at the Seminary of St. Joseph in Trois-Rivieres. Then he continued his studies in college. After that he graduated from the cinematography department of the University of Quebec in Montreal.
Early in his career, he won the Radio Canada youth film competition in 1990-1991. Three times won the highest national film award of Canada "Gini" for the best director: "Whirlpool" (2001), "Polytech" (2010) and "Fires" (2011). In 2010, his film Fires represented Canada at the 83rd Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. In January 2011, Denis Villeneuve was named one of the 10 most promising young directors according to the weekly Variety.
