Born March 7, 1964 is an American actress, comedian, and screenwriter.

Graduated from Arundel High School in Gumbrills, Maryland and from Hampton University with a BA in Marketing. After graduating from college, she took a job as a procurement officer at the National Security Agency, where she worked for five years.

Wanda began her career in 1987 performing in front of an audience at the Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington DC. In 1992 she moved to New York. Her first big job was at the Carolina Comedy Club with Chris Rock. In 1997, she joined the group of authors of The Chris Rock Show, and also performed on the show several times. The team of authors was nominated for an Emmy award four times.

In 2003, Sykes starred in a small role on the sitcom Wanda Special. In 2006, she landed a role in the comedy series The New Adventures of Old Christine. She also guest-starred on an episode of Will and Grace. In the same year, she voiced Stella in the cartoon "The Woods", Bessie in "Horns and Hooves" and Innoko in "Brother Bear 2", and starred in the films "My Super Ex" and "Evan Almighty". In October of that year, HBO aired Wanda's first stand-up performance, Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired, which was nominated for an Emmy.

In October 2008, Sykes appeared in a Think Before You Speak ad campaign aimed at curbing homophobia in youth communities. In March 2009, it was announced that Saturday's The Wanda Sykes Show was launching, which premiered on November 7, 2009. In April 2009, Out magazine included her in the annual list of 50 Influential People.

The premiere of the second stand-up performance "Wanda Sykes: I'ma Be" also took place on HBO in October 2009.
