Born October 16, 1962, The Bronx is an American playwright, film director, and screenwriter.
He attended Walden High School (a now defunct, highly progressive private school in Manhattan with a strong theater program) where he began writing plays.
His first play, The Rennings Children, was selected to participate in the Sondheim Festival supporting young playwrights. This happened in 1982, when Kenneth was a student in the drama and directing department at Wesleyan University. He later also studied at New York University.
The first theatrical success came to Lonergan with the one-act play This Is Our Youth (1996). It was followed by The Waverly Gallery (1999), based on the biography of his grandmother, and Lobby Hero (2002). In the 2009 off-Broadway production of Star Envoy, J. Smith-Cameron and Matthew Broderick starred.
Kenneth Lonergan's name first appeared on screens in the early 90s, when he co-wrote the animated series Doug. In 1999, Harold Ramis' film Analyze It, based on a script by Lonergan, was a hit with both audiences and critics. A year later, he directed his first film as a director - You Can Count on Me, which immediately earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
In 2003 the second will follow - for work on the historical crime drama "Gangs of New York". In 2005, he directed his next project, the drama Margaret with Anna Paquin in the title role, but due to the impossibility between producers and editors to agree on the final version of the film, the film was released only in 2011.
In 2016, the film "Manchester by the Sea" was released on the world screens, which brought many awards and nominations both to Lonergan himself and to its other creators, in particular, Casey Affleck, who received an Oscar for Best Actor.
