December 13, 1934 Los Angeles - July 13, 2012, Los Angeles - American film producer.
While continuing his studies at Stanford University, Richard began his career in the film industry while working for the story department at 20th Century Fox. In 1959, he made his first production of the film Violence. In the 1960s, he became President of the 20th Century Fox Film Studio. One year of his tenure, 1967, is described in The Studio by John Gregory Dunn. After deafening setbacks such as the 1967 film Doctor Dolittle, Richard was fired by his father. Then Richard got a job at the Warner Bros. as executive vice president, and a year later formed The Zanuck / Brown Company. In 1968 he married model and actress Linda Harrison. They divorced in 1978.
In 1972, Zanuck joined producer David Brown to form an independent production company called The Zanuck / Brown Company at Universal Pictures. Both producers worked on a couple of Steven Spielberg's early films, The Sugarland Express (1974) and the Oscar-winning thriller Jaws (1975). They later produced financially successful films such as Cocoon (1985) and the world famous Chauffeur Miss Daisy (1989) before ending their partnership in 1988. In 1990, both producers were jointly awarded the Irving Thalberg Award on behalf of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences. Richard has worked with director Tim Burton six times, producing for world-renowned films like Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), 2010's Alice in Wonderland ”and the film“ Dark Shadows ”(2012). Richard and director Barton found each other at first sight and Zanuck was his producer of choice.
In 1998, Zanuck's third wife Lili Fini Zanuck produced an episode of the HBO miniseries "From Earth to the Moon," entitled "We Cleared the Tower." In 2000, Zanuck and wife Lily Feeney co-produced the 72nd Academy Awards .
Richard Zanuck died in 2012 of myocardial infarction at his home in Los Angeles.
