The group was formed in the late 30s by several young guys from a school for the blind and deaf, located respectively in Alabama. At the time they were called The Happy Land Jubilee Singers. A few years later, they began to give concerts outside the alma mater. They performed in gospel style. Some time later, they were surprised to learn that their work was paid - but a peer who organized the concerts quietly took all the proceeds. This discovery served as an impetus for taking up music professionally.
By the end of the 40s, the group changed its name to The Five Blind Boys of Alabama and was slowly gaining momentum. By the 50s (the golden age of gospel music) it is becoming one of the most popular in a style that itself does not stand still. Its representatives are already performing not only in church premises - expanding boundaries and frameworks. By the end of the 60s, they actually disintegrated. However, in the early 80s he was going to take part in the musical "The Gospel at Colonus" again. The 90s became a turning point for the group - musicians began to combine gospel with blues.
