August 21, 1952, Ankara, Turkey - December 22, 2002, Brumfield, Somerset, England, UK - British rock musician, actor, composer, producer and director.

Studied at a private closed school in London. In 1973, John Mellor, who then bore the pseudonym Woody, joined The Vultures as a guitarist, which drew inspiration from early American rock and roll, blues, British rock of the 1960s, but its activities were of an amateur nature.

In the summer of 1974, Woody formed the 101'ers with which he first performed at a concert in September of the same year, and in the spring of 1975 Mellor changed his name to the pseudonym Joe Strummer. The 101'ers were a quintessential, obscure pub rock band that played primitive 1950s rock and roll, R&B in restaurants. Eventually, a small independent label drew attention to the group, and in March 1976 the group's debut single was recorded, scheduled for the summer of that year. However, the upcoming success was cut short: after seeing the Sex Pistols opening for The 101'ers in April of that year, he noted that his band was "yesterday." Strummer began to think about a different musical direction, because there was an obvious difference between his band The 101'ers and the Sex Pistols. Despite some social differences between the Sex Pistols and himself (he grew up in a middle-class environment and was much older than the punk generation), Strummer took a lot from the group's image arsenal. His stage image began to change. At the end of May, Strummer was offered an offer to join a new group (the future The Clash), which he accepted. The 101'ers disbanded and their first and last single was released after the breakup.

In The Clash, Strummer became the frontman, although he was far from the only author of lyrics and music. However, most of the vocals belong to him.

After The Clash disbanded in 1986, Strummer embarked on a solo career. His last project was The Mescaleros, which existed from 1999 to 2002.
