Nicole Krauss is from a Jewish family. Ancestors on the maternal side - immigrants from Germany and Ukraine, on the father's side - from Hungary and Belarus (the writer later dedicated the novel Love Story to their memory). She has been writing since the age of 14, started as a poet, published, and won an award at Yale.

Nicole Krauss studied at Stanford University under Joseph Brodsky and later wrote about him more than once. Visited St. Petersburg, studied in Great Britain (Oxford). She wrote a diploma about Joseph Cornell, and later a dissertation on Rembrandt, which she defended at the Courtauld Institute. In 2002 she published her first novel, highly praised by Susan Sontag and other influential critics. Published in The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper's Magazine.

Nicole Krauss's novels have been translated into many languages. Nicole received the French Prize for Best Foreign Book (2006) and other awards. In 2007, Granta magazine named Nicole Krauss among the 20 Best Young Novelists in the United States.
