Born July 30, 1960 in Houston, Texas. He studied literature at the University of Houston (Sam Houston State University), intending to become a writer. He interrupted his studies and worked on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico. During this period, he decided to become a director. After working on the platform, Linklater used the money he earned to purchase a camera and film equipment. He moved to Austin, where he founded the Austin Film Society in 1985, as well as Detour Filmproduction (after Edgar Ulmer's 1945 noir film) .
In 1987, Linklater directed the short film It's Impossible to Learn to Plow By Reading Books. In 1991, he finished work on the first $ 23,000 Slacker, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
His second feature film, High in Confusion, follows the life of a group of schoolchildren who spend their time aimlessly on the last day of class in 1976. It starred the then unknown actors Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey and Milla Jovovich. The whole action, as in many of the director's films, takes place within one day. In Before Sunrise (1995), the students, played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, meet on the train for a romantic night in Vienna. In 2004, the sequel "Before Sunset" was released, where the same characters meet several years later. The Newton Western, The Newton Boys (1998), reproduces the actual story of a gang of four brothers who robbed banks and trains. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Vincent d'Onofrio and Skeet Ulrich. After a hiatus, Linklater returns in 2001 with two films, Awakening Life and Tape. A distinctive feature of "Awakening Life" was the use of the rotoscoping technique, when animators draw each frame on top of the shot in the usual way. The director used a similar technique in the film about drug addicts "Blurred" (2006) based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick, where they played Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson In 2003 the comedy School of Rock was released. In 2005, Linklater was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Before Sunset. In November 2006, the film "Fast Food Nation" was released, based on the bestseller of the same name and dedicated to the influence of the fast food industry. In 2011 he directed the comedy "Bernie". From 2002 to 2014 (presumably) the director has been working on the documentary "Boyishness".
