Kirk Douglas was born in December 1916 in Amsterdam, New York. The name given at birth sounds like Isser. His parents were poor Jews, his father and mother moved to the United States from Russia after their engagement in 1908, and after a while the family decided to change their names to more American ones.
For a period of time, Isser was a professional fighter, and as soon as the Second World War began, he volunteered for the navy. Returning home, since 1945 he took part in performances on Broadway, initially under the name Izi Demsky. After some time, Lauren Bacall, a close friend and roommate, helped him move to Hollywood.
The first film with Kirk Douglas, a noir-style drama Martha Ivers's Strange Love, was released in 1946. After that, he starred in several more films, but fame was brought to him by the image of the boxer Midge Kelly in the 1949 film Champion. Then he starred with Vincent Minnelli in the films Angry and the Beautiful and Lust for Life. For all three of the above pictures, he was nominated for an Oscar.
Douglas peaked with Stanley Kubrick in the war drama Trail of Glory and the historic Spartacus. Playing in the latter brought him fame on the territory of the USSR.
In the 80s, Kirk practically stopped acting in films, he was involved in politics and charity. In 1996, Douglas, being at an advanced age, suffered a stroke, but was unable to fully recover, which is why he began to speak worse.
In 1999 he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for his contribution to the cinema. And two years later he received the US National Medal in the Arts. At the moment, the last film with Kirk Douglas, the melodrama Illusion, was released in 2004.
