Michael's father, Jack, is a Ukrainian emigre and World War II veteran who later became a herbalist, and Esther's mother is an ordinary girl from Chicago. Mann was close to his father and paternal grandfather, a Russian emigre who had once fought in World War I. Mann grew up near Humboldt Park, still in Chicago, and as a teenager plunged headlong into the rapidly gaining popularity of blues music.
