Born July 27, 1984, Boston, Massachusetts, USA is an American actress.
In Boston, she began her acting career in local productions such as Fiddler on the Roof. In 2002, Schilling graduated from Wayland High School, and in 2006 she received her Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University. She then studied acting at New York University, and in 2007 made her screen debut with a small role in the independent film Dark Story.
In 2009, the unknown Schilling was unexpectedly able to land the lead role in NBC's medical drama Mercy, surprising the casting producers with her range of acting. At that time, she worked as a nanny in Manhattan. The show was unsuccessful and was closed in the spring of 2010. Schilling, however, soon landed the female lead in Lucky, the adaptation of another novel by Nicholas Sparks. She also starred in the 2011 film Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, and then briefly appeared in Operation Argo, as the protagonist's wife.
In 2012, Schilling landed the lead role in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. She plays the anti-heroine Piper Chapman, a bisexual woman who goes to jail after her former drug smuggler turned her over to the authorities. Schilling got the role by beating a number of other major actresses. The role earned her critical praise and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama in 2014. Nonetheless, for an Emmy, Schilling was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
