Jorgen Leth was born on June 14, 1937 in Aarhus, Denmark. He studied literature and anthropology in Aarhus and Copenhagen. From 1959 to 1968 as a cultural critic (jazz, theater, cinema) he wrote for leading Danish newspapers. He was greatly influenced by the work of the English anthropologist Bronislav Malinovsky. For several years he traveled to Africa (1961), South America, India (1966) and Southeast Asia (1970-1971). His first book was published in 1962. He has published 10 poetry books and 8 popular science books. He shot his first film in 1963 and has since made more than 40 films, many of which have gained recognition around the world. His most famous film is the 1967 short, Perfect Man. In 2003, Jorgen Leth, together with Lars von Trier, participates in a film experiment based on The Perfect Man - Five Hindrances. He worked as a creative consultant at the Danish Film Institute in 1971-1973 and 1975-1977. In 1977-1982 he was the chairman of the board of the institute. He is also a professor at the Danish National Film School in Copenhagen and has lectured at the University of Los Angeles, Burkeley, Harvard and other American universities. Among the awards he received are the Thomas Mann Prize for 1972, the Special Prize of the Danish Academy for 1983 and others. In 1995, the Kingdom of Denmark awarded Summer a Lifetime Grant for his achievements in the field of cinematography. Since 1991 he has been living in Jacmel, Haiti. From 1999 to 2005 he was the Royal Honorary Consul of Denmark in this city.
