Romero was one of the candidates for the director's chair of the film Resident Evil, but the producers did not like his script and ideas, and Paul Anderson was assigned to direct the film. However, a remake of Dawn of the Dead, directed by Zack Snyder, rekindled the film companies' interest in Romero, and soon Romero began preparations for filming Land of the Dead. Warner Brothers allocated 15 million dollars for the final tetralogy of zombie films "Land of the Dead" (which would be more correctly translated as "Land of the Dead" in the context of the series). Many critics saw social connotations in much of Romero's work. They viewed Night of the Living Dead as a response to the turbulent 60s, Dawn of the Dead as a satire on consumer society, Day of the Dead as an exploration of the conflict between science and the military, and Land of the Dead as study of class conflict.
