Courtney B. Vance was born in 1960 in Detroit. While studying at Harvard University, Vance began working as an actor at the Shakespeare Company, and later studied fine arts at Yale School, where one of his fellow students, Angela Bassett, turned out to be his future wife. In 1997, the couple formalized their relationship, and in 2006 they had twins: son Slater and daughter Bronwyn. The family now lives in Los Angeles.
In 1987, Vance made his film debut in the drama The Hamburger Height, and throughout the 1990s received a number of supporting roles in The Hunt for Red October in 1990, The Adventures of Huck Finn in 1993, Out of the Law in 1992. In 1995, the film with Courtney B. Vance Panther was a breakthrough for the actor and ensured his popularity. Another notable role went to Vance in the romantic comedy The Preacher's Wife.
Later, Vance took on longer work on television: roles in the series Law & Order, Thirty-something, or Now another day. But wide popularity came to the actor only with the TV series Law & Order. Malicious intent, in which Vance starred during 2001-2006 as an assistant district attorney.
In 2009, the actor found himself with his wife on the set: he played the husband of the heroine Bassett in the TV series Ambulance. This film was followed by supporting roles for Courtney B. Vance: Marcus in the thoughtful drama Extreme Measures in 2010, Delvin in the intriguing thriller Sundering in 2011, and Agent Jim Block in the horror film Destination 5.
2013 saw another success: Vance returns to the theater stage and the play Lucky brings him the long-awaited Tony Award.
