Born November 28, 1948.
From a Jewish family. Father - Henrik Holland, sociologist, publicist, PUWP activist, mother - Irena Rybczynska, journalist, participant of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, their parents died in the ghetto.
Sister - director and screenwriter Magdalena Lazarkevich. Husband - director Laco (Ladislav) Adamik, their daughter - director and screenwriter Katarzyna (Kasya) Adamik.
Graduated from the Stefan Batory Lyceum in Warsaw, then from the Film and Television Department of the Music Academy in Prague (1971). Influenced by new Czech cinema. Upon returning to Poland, she worked as an assistant director for Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi, starred in several supporting roles. Since the mid-1970s, she began to make her own films (short film Evening at Abdon's, 1975, based on Ivashkevich). For her debut feature film Provincial Actors (1978) received the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes IFF. Since 1981 she worked abroad, first in Germany and France, then in the USA. Films feature films, documentaries and advertising films. In addition to scripts for her films, she wrote scripts for Andrzej Wajda (Without anesthesia, Love in Germany, Danton, Demons, Korczak, etc.) and Kieslowski (Three colors) .
Winner of numerous awards. Teaches at Brooklyn College, New York University.
