Cave In was formed by Jay Frechett and Steve Brodsky in early 1995. The initial line-up consisted of Frechette on vocals, Brodsky on guitar, vocals, Adam McGrath on second guitar, JR Conners on drums, and Justin Mattes on bass. They soon released demos and a handful of split releases with bands such as Gambit, Piebald and Early Grace. In 1997, the band released their first release, a self-titled 7-inch single on Aaron Turner's Hydra Head label. Following this release, the band embarked on a three-week East Coast tour. This tour was, however, short due to Jay Frechette and the Boston band Ten Yard Fight. After Frechette returned from the month of the Ten Yard Fight tour, there was a mutual decision for him to leave Cave In and join Ten Yard Fight on a permanent basis. At this point, Dave Skrod stepped in for a brief temporary tenure as vocalist. In 1998, most of the tracks from the previous 7 releases and recordings were composed in the form of the "Beyond Hypothermia" album.
