Units are a non-functioning early electronic, punk, newwave and synthpunk group formed in San Francisco in 1978 and active through 1984. As one of the first American first wave electronic bands, they are widely cited (along with The Screamers, Los Angeles) as the pioneer of the genre now known as synthpunk. The main participants were Scott Reiser and Rachel Webber, but other participants at one time included Brad Saunders, Randy Danaen, Tim Ennis, Jay Darra Lori Lorenzo, Ron Lantz, Amy Weiss, Richard Driscoll, Elix Rudis, Seth Miller, John Parker, David Allen Jr. , Jabari Allen, Mark Henry, Jim Reynolds, D.C. Carter, and Projector Rick Prelinger. Distinctive features of Units were the use of synthesizers instead of guitars, and multimedia performances, including numerical projections of satirical, instructor films that criticized conformism and consumption. “Unit Training Film # 1,” produced by Scott Reiser and Rachel Webber, compiled from film clips the band projected onto the stage during performances, was shown by the group in cinemas around the San Francisco Waterfront. Alternative press publisher W. Vale called Units "the first San Francisco band to play without a guitar," and Los Angeles-based music critic Kickboy Face, from fanzine Slash, wrote these lines inspired by their performance "that night, watching as Units put their machines into submission, I realized that another cliche opinion of mine was being carried over to smithereens.
