Recognized American director and screenwriter Gus Van Sant was born in the summer of 1952 in the eastern United States, in Louisville, Kentucky. The future author of Hollywood masterpieces was born into a family of very wealthy emigrants from Holland, who could provide their beloved offspring with decent education. While studying at the Rhode Island Art School, Gus not only studied film and drawing, but also wrote music and made useful contacts. For example, in high school, he met the cult writer William Burroughs, who definitely influenced the young man's still-undeveloped creative streak.

Gus Van Sant made his first steps in the cinema as assistant director Roger Corman, but already in 1985 he shot his first film called Bad Night. The drama about homosexuals was filmed by Gus without the help of producers and solely with his own money. Despite a certain risk, the film paid off and even became a cult among homosexual youth. However, the real fame came to the director when the film Pharmacy Cowboy with Matt Dillon in the title role was released worldwide. The aspiring creator was recognized by both film critics and audiences, so when he presented his next film My Personal Idaho at the Venice Film Festival, the audience accepted him as a professional, not a beginner.

It is also interesting that the director realizes himself both in big-budget cinema in the best traditions of Hollywood, and in his own independent films.
