May 7, 1901 - May 13, 1961 - American actor.

Educated at a private British school. Beginning in 1926, he starred in silent films - mainly in westerns, this was facilitated by his ability to brilliantly hold on to the saddle. The first sound film with Cooper's participation was The Virginian (1929) based on the novel of the same name by Owen Wister. In this picture, Cooper spoke lines in a stingy, abrupt manner, which later became his hallmark.

During the 1930s, Cooper starred in westerns and adventure films (such as The Deeds and Days of the Bengal Lancer, 1935), vying with Clark Gable for the title of Hollywood's first womanizer. There were rumors of his romantic relationships with Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly and Patricia Neal (who was actually forced to have an abortion under pressure from Cooper). In 1942 he received his first Oscar - for the film Sergeant York.

During World War II, Cooper played frequently on the South Pacific Front. The picture "Pride of the Yankees" (1942), in which he played the famous baseball player, enjoyed great success among American soldiers. Meanwhile, critics increasingly complained that Cooper was filming too much and was playing "half-hearted".

After the war, most of Cooper's films were westerns. In the era of McCarthyism, the views of the actor became rather conservative, under the influence of his wife he converted to Catholicism. In 1953, he received his second Oscar for his role in the film High Noon.

During the last years of his life, Cooper had to fight against prostate cancer, but he tried to keep the diagnosis secret. He spent a lot of time at the ranch of his friend Ernest Hemingway. A few months before the death of the actor, his friend, Jimmy Stewart, receiving an honorary Oscar on behalf of Cooper, hinted that he was seriously ill. Five days after the world celebrated Cooper's 60th birthday, the actor was gone.
