She was born on December 9, 1934 in the English city of York in the family of a practicing physician Reginald Arthur Dench and his wife Eleanor Olav (nee Jones). Her father also served as a staff doctor at the York Royal Theater, so the lively and restless Judy, who loves to draw and dance, became involved in the theater environment. Judy's older brother Jeffrey Dench (born 1928) also became an actor.
On February 5, 1971, Dench married her colleague, the Royal Shakespeare troupe actor Michael Williams, and the following year they had a daughter, who was named Tara Cressida French (now known as the actress Finty Williams), in 1998 they had a grandson Sam.
