March 14, 1916 - March 4, 2009 - American playwright and screenwriter. To Kill a Mockingbird, based on the novel of the same name by Harper Lee, he was best known for the Oscar in the 1962 Best Adapted Screenplay category. In 1983, Foote again received an Oscar, but this time in the category "Best Original Screenplay" for the film "Tender Mercy." In 1995, Horton Foote was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his play Young Man from Atlanta.
