Born September 29, 1970 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of Danish film director and editor Anders Refn and cameraman Vibeke Winding. Nicholas's brother is Danish singer Kasper Winding. Refna spent part of her childhood in New York.
In 1981 he moved to the USA, where in 1993 he graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (English) Russian .. Refn made his first full-length film in 1996, directing the crime thriller Bandyugani (English) Russian. After the film's success, Refn directed two more sequels on set.
In 2011, the thriller "Drive" with Ryan Gosling in the title role was released on the screens of world cinemas. For directing the picture, Nicholas Winding Refn won the prize for best directorial work at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Analysts noted that the chairman of the jury, Robert De Niro, could have given the prize to Refn only because the tape reminded him of Scorsez's "Taxi Driver", in which De Niro played the main role. The film was well received by film critics and received numerous film prizes and awards.
Nicholas Winding Refn is married to actress Liv Korfixen, with whom the director has two children.
