Born in London into a family of actors Peter Penry-Jones and Angela Thorne. His brother Lawrence is also an actor.
Studied at Dulwich College in southeast London (where Sir Palam Granville Woodhouse studied at one time) and at the Old Vic School of Bristol Theater
In 1995, he appeared on stage with his mother in the production Uncomfortable Farm.
Since 2007 he has been married to Irish actress Dervle Kirwan. The couple have two children: daughter Florence (05/01/2001) and son Peter (04/08/2006).
